Street Fighter 25th Anniversary

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Capcom’s flagship Street Fighter series, and to celebrate the occasion they have announced a series of events that will be taking place throughout 2012. Of course, it wouldn’t be Capcom if we didn’t get some re-releases to go along with them!

Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collectors Set

First up for those with either an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 is the 25th Anniversary Collectors set. (RRP $149.99 USD).  Taken directly from the product blurb, gamers who purchase this set will “get a snapshot of Street Fighter with four critically-acclaimed games that represent important chapters in Street Fighter history”. Set within a nice collectors display case, the package includes:

  • Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition game disc
  • Street Fighter X Tekken  game disc
  • Downloadable Content including Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Costume Pack (over 100 costumes), Street Fighter X Tekken Character Update (12 additional characters) & Complete Swap Costume collection.
  • A rather cool looking 8 inch light-up statue featuring Street Fighter poster boy Ryu mid shoryuken.
  • An awesome 2 disc Blu Ray set featuring a 25th Anniversary documentary, the fantastic Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie anime, Street Fighter IV: The Ties that Bind anime (originally included with the Street Fighter IV: Collector’s Edition), Super Street Fighter IV OVA anime (which was previously unavailable outside of Japan) & the hilariously bad Street Fighter: The Animated Series.
  • An 11 disc soundtrack featuring music from the original Street Fighter, all the way through to Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and also includes music from Street Fighter X Tekken and fan created remixes and original music.
  • A 64 page hardcover art tribute book, a full size replica Ryu belt and individually numbered certificate of authenticity.

All up, this is a rather nice collection for fans & collectors of the series, but it is a little disappointing that the original Street Fighter is only represented via the soundtrack and the game is nowhere to be found. Another disappointing fact is that this collection has not been officially released outside of North America, so fans will need to import if they want to get their hands on it. It should also be noted that due to its heavy reliance on DLC, not all features may be useable due to some of the DLC possibly being region locked.

StreetFighter25.com

Capcom have also launched a dedicated website for the 25th anniversary, where visitors can check out art galleries featuring some fantastic pieces from fans all over the world. There is also a ‘Match Maker’ section that allows players to add & register their details to a world map and let other players know what games they are interested in playing, their skill level and also share their Xbox Live Gamertag, PSN ID & Steam ID.

Finally, on the sites main page, they have also included a rather neat ‘Interactive Story’ feature that also acts as a timeline showing the games rich history. It also allows visitors to share their experiences with the series via text, pictures or You Tube videos. There are some truly amazing collections to be seen here and some great recounts from players detailing what the Street Fighter series means to them!

25th Anniversary Tournaments

Last but definitely not least, Capcom have been running a series of tournaments throughout the year with locations spanning over the US, Europe & Asia (sadly, Australia has not been included in the festivities). The games included in these tournaments are Street Fighter X Tekken, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Online Edition, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. All up, there will be a total of $500,000 in prize money on the line plus other prizes included (the winner of the Street Fighter x Tekken tournament wins a custom Scion FR-S Sports Coupe!). It all culminates on December 8th when the grand finals will are held in San Francisco.

So there you have it. From all the team here at Retro Domination, happy 25th birthday to what is arguably one of the greatest fighting game series of all of time. Stay free!
