From Bedroom to Billions has finally been released, one and a half years after the Kickstarter pledging began.
Was it worth the wait?
With a whopping 2+ hours of educational entertainment it’ll keep you enthralled; whether you are a Vintage computer enthusiast, or simply interested in the games industry. It’s nice to see a documentary released which isn’t focused on the US or Japanese games industry, and it had great incite on the goings on back in the 80’s.
As soon as the movie begins you can tell the quality is above reproach, and the whole production feels like genuine love for the topic is presented throughout.
All of the main game publishers we grew up to love as kids are mentioned; like US Gold, Ocean and Hewson Consultants, amongst others.
The guest interviewee’s are amazing; with the likes of Jeff Minter, Rob Hubbard, Andrew Hewson and Ben Daglish, to name a few, all of whom share their interesting anecdotes.
Financial struggle seems to be the most common theme of the documentary, as the UK games industry strived to keep up with the booming USA and Japan.
If you’re a fan of the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amiga or Atari computers you will certainly enjoy it. However, funnily enough, I believe the Amstrad CPC only gets one or two mentions, which is surprising as it was one of the big 3 8-bit computers of the day.
Game footage and 80’s music throughout the film will satisfy the kid in you.
A big thank you to Anthony and Nicole Caulfield for your dedicated work and showing the rest of the world that the UK games industry is a force to be reckoned with.
