Top 5 Commodore 64 games that looked the goods

Yes Yes Yes, here at Retro Domination we know that games don’t have to have the best graphics to be fun. But we are here to show you what C64 games actually look the goods, graphical feats that no one would ever dream that the 8bit power house could accomplish. The top 5 games that are shown are not only beautiful to look at but also fun as ever to play.

No 5: The Last Ninja 3 – System 3

System 3 released this gem back in 1991 at the end of the C64’s life and is considered the best version out of the other formats it was released for. The intro is amazing and to top it off it has an amazing soundtrack.  It even made your Amiga and Atari St fans look at the C64 version and say DAMN!!!! It was also released for the Wii Virtual Console but was taken down soon after due to a bug that froze the game after passing the first level.

No 4: Enforcer: Fullmetal Megablaster – Golden Disk

This 1992 release by Manfred Trenz is the best you’re going to get as shooters are concerned on the C64. R-Type, Katakis, Armalyte and X-out are awesome games but this game just has that edge over them. Just don’t get too cocky as this game is hard so patience is the key to succeed.

No 3: Turrican II: The Final Fight – Rainbow Arts

Another classic from Manfred Trenz, this is plat-forming done right. If you’re a fan of the Metroid Series and SHUMPS this game is right up your ally. Lots of nice graphic trickery and sounds effects that will blow your ears off.

No 2: Creatures 2: Torture Trouble – Apex Computer Productions

When this game was released back in 1992 my jaw dropped and it’s a big departure from its predecessors play style. They took out the standard plat-forming from the first game and only included new torture levels with boss fights. The Bosses in this game are big and by big I mean HUDGE!!!!! I thought graphically this game could not be beat but I was wrong.

No 1: Mayhem in Monsterland – Apex Computer Productions

John and Steve Rowlands did not disappoint with their final release on the C64 and is the only game to ever score 100% in Commodore Format Magazine.  This game is such a pleasure to play and is in vain of the Mario Series with its frantic plat-forming  and Sonic the Hedgehog’s speed combined. Graphics are just unbelievable with no slowdown or flicker and the clarity of the animation is brilliant. It’s even got a Wii Virtual Console release,  so there’s no excuse not to grab it.
