Not a day goes by without there being a report of yet another developer turning to crowd funding sites like Kickstarter to help try and get the funding for their projects that they so desperately need. However it’s not every day that the developer in question happens to be Keiji Inafune, the illustrator and co-designer of Mega Man, arguably one of the most popular and iconic characters in video game history!
Since Infaune’s departure from Capcom in 2010, Mega Man, save for a few a forgettable guest appearances along with the fan project Street Fighter x Mega Man, has been put on the backburner with a string of cancelled games leaving the characters future uncertain. Hearing the cries of the thousands of the Blue Bombers fans, Infaune has returned with his new company Comcept USA LLC, and is turning to Kickstarter to try and generate the necessary funding for his new project, Mighty No. 9!
To say that Mighty No. 9 bares a huge resemblance to Mega Man is the understatement of the century. The game is being described as an “all-new Japanese side-scrolling action game that takes the best aspects of the 8- and 16-bit era classics”. You play as “Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures the world over to go berserk. Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through six stages (or more, via stretch goals) you can tackle in any order you choose, using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet!”. Sound familiar?
The development team behind the Mighty No.9 is extremely impressive and reads like a Mega Man developer history book. Along with Inafune, other names on the team include Naoya Tomita on Game Design, whose credits include level design on Mega Mans 1 and 2 along with character design on Mega Man 5 & 6, Manami Matsumae on Music, responsible for the entire soundtrack and sound effects on the original Mega Man, Kimo Kimo as Lead Character Designer whose impressive credits include work on Street Fighter Alpha 3, Darkstalkers 3, Red Earth & The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. The list goes on and on!

The game is currently being developed for the PC and will feature full gamepad support and will be made available for download via Steam and DRM free digital distribution platforms. The Kickstarter page also states that bringing Mighty No. 9 to home consoles, Mac & Linux is a high priority but can only be achieved by via stretch goals once the initial goal of $900,000USD has been met.
Backers have the choice of pledging as little as $5 (which nets you an ‘exclusive Mighty Number, Forum Access, Name in Backer Credits & Backer Only Participation Events’) all the way up to $10,000, which includes dinner and drinks with Keiji Inafune in Tokyo along with all other non limited rewards! The minimum amount for a pledge required to secure a digital download of the game is $20. The project went live on Kickstarter on August 31st, 2013 and will wrap on the 1st of October, 2013 and should it be successful in being funded, has an estimated release date of April 2015. At the time of writing, Mighty No.9 has already received $154,782 of its $900,000 goal.
